2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid vs 2025 BMW 218 Gran Coupe – Which RM250k sedan should you buy?

Shopping for a car has never been straightforward. Different models often have overlapping prices, and in this scenario, a set budget of RM 250,000 could get you a top-spec 2025 Toyota Camry or an entry-level 2025 BMW 218 Gran Coupe.

Overview – Two very different sedans, same budget

You read that right. With a budget of RM 250,000, one can either shop for a mainstream sedan packed with features and equipment, or a sedan with a premium brand.

Both are very compelling options for the money, though that begs the question, “Which one should I buy?”

2025 Toyota Camry XV80 Hybrid – Flagship non-Lexus sedan

The first is the 2025 Toyota Camry XV80 – Toyota Malaysia’s most expensive non-Lexus sedan model on offer.

Similar to the XV70-generation Camry, the new-generation XV80 model is also imported (CBU) from Thailand.

Launched in late-2024, the XV80-generation Toyota Camry marks a noticeable price jump compared to the XV70-generation model, as prices now start from RM 221,800 for the 2.5V variant, and from RM 248,800 for the Hybrid variant. For the purpose of this comparison, we will focus on the Hybrid variant due to the price and features.

Powering the Hybrid variant is a petrol-electric 2.5-litre petrol engine mated to a permanent magnet synchronous motor for a combined system output of 230 PS.  0-100 km/h is dispatched in just 7.2 seconds.

Toyota claims that the Camry Hybrid can return up to 4.0L/100 km (25 km/L, test cycle unspecified), when combined with its 50-litre fuel tank, would allow for a theoretical range of 1,250 km.

Being Toyota Malaysia’s most expensive sedan, it is also chock full of features, including:

Compared to the sub-RM200k XV70-generation Camry, granted prices have gone up a fair bit, but so has the kit count, which we reckon, is completely justifiable.

2025 BMW 218 Gran Coupe – Entry point into the BMW line-up

On the other end of the scale is the 2025 BMW 218 Gran Coupe – BMW Malaysia’s entry point into the premium segment. Like the previous-generation model, this new F74-generation is locally-assembled at the Inokom facility in Kulim, Kedah.

At launch, the 2025 BMW 218 Gran Coupe is priced from RM 218,800. Add on the extended warranty and service package and the price increases to RM 240,500.

Unlike the advanced petrol-electric hybrid found in the Camry, the 2025 BMW 218 Gran Coupe features a regular turbocharged mill.

Power for the 218 Gran Coupe comes from a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that does 156 PS from 4,900 rpm to 6,500 rpm and 230 Nm of torque from 1,500 rpm to 4,600 rpm, sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

This powertrain is enough to propel the 218 Gran Coupe from a standstill to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds.

Standard equipment on the 2025 BMW 218 Gran Coupe include:

Which sedan offers better value for money?

Despite both models occupying different segments of the market, the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid and 2025 BMW 218 Gran Coupe are priced closed enough for potential buyers to cross-shop.

The 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid does offer a lot of equipment for the money, including a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone air-conditioning, and crucially, a generous rear legroom. The Camry’s 2,825 mm-long wheelbase also means that highway cruising is effortless.

On the other hand, the Camry is still a Toyota. Why pay almost RM 250,000 for a Toyota, when with a similar amount of money, one can have a BMW instead?

Yes, the BMW 218 Gran Coupe may be an entry-level model, but it still is, fundamentally, a BMW.

While the BMW 218 Gran Coupe is an entry-level model, sitting inside the cabin doesn’t feel like one. BMW has done a swell job with the features and packaging of the 218 that the model doesn’t feel cheap. Additionally, the BMW 218 Gran Coupe also offers sleek frame-less doors while the Camry gets regular framed doors.

And to some folks out there, the mere mention of a BMW is enough to seal the deal.

Conclusion – Camry or 218 Gran Coupe?

Both the 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid and BMW 218 Gran Coupe make a strong case at the RM250,000 mark, but for very different reasons. The Camry Hybrid delivers space, comfort, and an impressive features list, making it ideal for long-distance cruising and family use. The BMW 218 Gran Coupe trades some practicality for a premium badge and the brand prestige that comes with it.

At the end of the day, it comes down to priorities. If you are seeking for comfort, efficiency, and equipment, the Camry is the logical pick. However, if you want style and a slice of Bavarian luxury, the BMW 218 Gran Coupe is hard to resist.
