New 2026 Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 facelift launched in Malaysia – R-Line preview, GTI from RM 242,990

At long last, the new 2026 Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 facelift is now in Malaysia. Official distributor Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) just launched the new C-segment hatchback in the country moments ago.

Overview

This facelift exercise marks the debut of the facelifted Mk8.5 Golf GTI in Malaysia, as well as serving as a preview for the new Golf R-Line.

As before, the Volkswagen Golf is locally-assembled (CKD) at the Hicom facility in Pekan, Pahang.

Prices start from RM 242,990 for the Golf GTI, including the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP).

“The Golf family has never been ordinary; it is your everyday made exciting and your drives made unforgettable,” said Renate Noessler, Managing
Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia.

“The new Golf R-Line is physical proof that sporty can also mean sensible by being fuel efficient without giving up the desired element of style. With
the new GTI, we are giving our fans more power, sharper design, and smarter technology, ensuring the GTI continues to thrill in performance and handling,” she added.

Exterior

The most noticeable upgrade over the pre-facelift model is the addition of the new IQ.Light matrix LED headlights, replete with the illuminated VW badge.

While both the GTI and R-Line variants receive a revised front bumper with aggressive extensions at each end, the GTI can be visually differentiated by its hexagonal LED front fog lights – a signature design that debuted on the Mk8 GTI.

Elsewhere, the VW Golf MK8.5, in its GTI form, also receives the 18-inch Richmond five-spoke alloy wheels.

As for the Golf R-Line, it wears 17-inch Coventry alloy wheels wrapped in 225/45R17 tyres all-round.

Colour options for both the R-Line and GTI include Anemone Blue, Grenadilla Black, Kings Red, Moonstone Grey, and Oryx White.

Interior

The cabin of the new 2026 Volkswagen Golf continues its fully-digital, driver-centric layout, with the addition of a new 12.9-inch tablet-style infotainment display running on the intuitive MIB4 system, as well as a 10.0-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster

Also standard is the Air Care Climatronic tri-zone air-conditioning system with illuminated touch sliders, IDA voice assistant, Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Qi wireless charging pad, and USB-C ports.

Powertrain

Though a preview, VPCM has provided details surrounding the new Golf R-Line. This new entry-level Golf gets a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine paired to a mild-hybrid (MHEV) system that does 150 PS and 250 Nm. Said engine is paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch (DSG) automatic transmission, enabling a 0-100 km/h time of 8.6 seconds, whilst returning a fuel consumption of 5.2L/100 km.

The hot hatch Golf GTI, on the other hand, gets a new EA888 Evo 4 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that outputs 265 PS and 370 Nm, hooked up to a seven-speed DSG automatic. Thanks to the additional 20 PS compared to the pre-facelift model, the Mk8.5 Golf GTI completes the century sprint in 5.7 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 250 km/h.
