2026 Proton eMas 7 PHEV launched: Malaysia’s first dual-powered EV priced from RM 105,800*, 3 variants

Proton is on a roll with its electrified models, starting with the eMas 7 in late-2024, followed by the eMas 5 in late-2025. And this is Proton’s third electrified model, the 2026 Proton eMas 7 PHEV.

Like earlier eMas models, the 2026 Proton eMas 7 PHEV is a rebadged Geely model, in this case, the Geely Galaxy Starship 7 (sold outside of China as the Starray EM-i).

Overview

The 2026 Proton eMas 7 PHEV was previewed in mid-January, in which Pro-Net (Proton New Energy Sdn Bhd) gave us an early look at their upcoming PHEV SUV.

Three variants will be made available: Prime, Premium, and Premium Plus. At launch, the eMas 7 PHEV will be imported (CBU) from China, with local assembly (CKD) works set to commence at a later date.

Prices start from RM 105,800 for the Prime variant, while the Premium goes for RM 119,800. As for the top-spec Premium Plus, the price is RM 125,800. All prices are on-the-road, without insurance. These prices include a RM 4,000 rebate, valid for the first 5,000 customers.

Exterior

Versus the regular eMas 7, the PHEV sibling gets a totally redesigned exterior. There’s now a split headlight assembly, with LED daytime running lights (DRLs) sitting atop the LED headlights beneath. The Premium and Premium Plus variants also get a full-width light bar.

The front and rear bumpers are also different from the BEV eMas 7. Further separating the BEV from the PHEV are the door handles – the eMas 7 PHEV gets regular door handles, a departure from the eMas 7’s hidden type.

Wheel sizes are identical to the BEV eMas 7: 225/55R18 for the Prime and 235/50R19 for the Premium and Premium Plus. That said, the eMas 7 PHEV receives a different multi-spoke rim design.

In terms of measurements, the Proton eMas 7 PHEV is 4,740 mm long, 1,940 mm wide, and 1,685 mm tall, with a 2,755 mm wheelbase.

That puts the PHEV marginally longer, wider, and taller than the eMas 7. Even the wheelbase is 5 mm longer than the pure electric version. For reference, the eMas 7 measures 4,615 mm long, 1,901 mm wide, and 1,670 mm tall. The wheelbase of the BEV eMas 7 is 2,750 mm.

Body colours include Aquamarine Blue, Galena Grey, Lithium White, Mercury Silver, and Obsidian Black.

Interior

Despite the differences in exterior design, much of the eMas 7 PHEV’s cabin is lifted wholesale from its BEV sibling.

The biggest difference is the fuel percentage nestled in the infotainment system. Similar to the eMas 7, there’s a large 15.4-inch 2.5K infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which pumps audio through a 16-speaker Flyme sound system (Premium and Premium Plus only).

The eMas 7 PHEV also adds a far side airbag, bringing the total airbag count to seven. This feature was dropped from the eMas 7 when Proton adopted the model from Geely.

Boot space is rated at 528 litres with the rear seats up. Fold down the rear seats and boot space can be expanded to 2,065 litres.

For added privacy, the eMas 7 PHEV features a two-tiered boot system, with an additional 100 litres of underfloor storage space. Scattered around the cabin are 30 storage compartments.

Powertrain

The 2026 Proton eMas 7 PHEV features a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain – the first for Proton.

Under the bonnet lies a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine that’s codenamed BHE15-BFN, which may be similar to the one found in the Saga MC3, but has been reworked to be more fuel efficient. Power figures are 99 PS and 125 Nm.

Mated to this engine is an 11-in-1 dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), combining an integrated starter-generator and drive motor. The combined system output of the eMas 7 PHEV is 262 PS and 262 Nm of torque. There’s no traditional gearbox, as the electric motor is the primary source of propulsion. The engine can provide additional power in Parallel Mode or Direct Drive Mode – the latter bypasses the electric motor.

For the Prime and Premium variants, there’s an 18.4-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, while the Premium Plus variant gets a larger 29.8-kWh LFP battery pack. Both batteries are of the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) type, utilising the Geely Aegis Short Blade technology.

According to Proton, the eMas 7 PHEV in its Prime and Premium trim, completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.0 seconds, while the Premium Plus completes the same sprint in 8.2 seconds, possibly due to the added weight of the sunroof and larger battery pack.

Under the NEDC cycle, the eMas 7 PHEV returns a fuel consumption figure of 4.3 L/100 km for the Prime and Premium variants. The Premium Plus variant returns 4.4 L/100 km under the same test cycle.

There’s a large 51-litre fuel tank, which can return up to 1,000 km for the Prime and Premium variants. The Premium Plus is able to stretch that figure up to 1,065 km.

As for the pure electric range, the Prime and Premium variants can offer up to 105 km, while the Premium Plus can do up to 170 km under the NEDC cycle.

Being a plug-in hybrid means that the eMas 7 PHEV can be plugged in too: the Premium and Prime variants accept up to 30 kW of DC charging, with the 30% to 80% state-of-charge (SoC) time taking less than 20 minutes. The Premium Plus takes up to 60-kW of DC fast charging, which does the same 30% to 80% SoC in 16 minutes.
