Mystery Toyota two-door coupe being tested ahead of WRC27 season, sounds like GR Yaris?

Well this is an interesting development – Toyota appears to be testing a new rally machine ahead of the World Rally Championship 2027 season, and it doesn’t look like the Toyota GR Yaris.

Seen here is a mysterious two-door coupe that was shot by Marcio Pereira, during the testing season in Portugal.

According to the photographer, said prototype appears to be running on the Rally2 powertrain, as it sounds like the current GR Yaris Rally2.

Toyota technical director Tom Fowler told DirtFish that they are in fact, testing a protype car, but stopped short on sharing more details.

“At this point in time we are already running our prototype test car. The design team are concentrating on all the feedback that’s coming from that car and working around issues and improvements. The original target was to start running the car in 2026. We met that target. The car has been running for a few tests already and it’s definitely done more than 2,000 kilometers. I can’t tell you the exact figure.”

While it is interesting to speculate, it remains to be seen what’s hiding under Toyota’s camouflage, seeing that the company doesn’t currently offer a model with such proportions.

One such possibility is the rumoured Toyota GR Celica – a revived Toyota rally icon from the 80s all the way to the early-90s.

Back then, the Celica, from the ST165-generation all the way to the ST205-generation model cemented Toyota’s foothold in the World Rally Championship series.

Could this upcoming revived Celica continue that legacy? Time will tell.
