SAIC Motor Malaysia has announced their plans to commence local assembly (CKD) works of MG vehicles in Malaysia starting Q1 2026. SAIC Motor Malaysia will be partnering with EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) to CKD their models here.
The CKD announcement was made by Mr Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, together with YBhd Datuk Aminar Rashid, Chairman of Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institution (MaRii), and YBhg En. Hamidon bin Abdullah, the Executive Chairman of EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB).
The EPMB facility in Melaka is capable of assembling green energy vehicles, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), as well as internal combustion engine (ICE) models.
Which MG model will be CKD here?
While the press release stopped short of mentioning which model will be locally-assembled (CKD) here, our educated guess would be the MG S5 EV.

“This remarkable journey would not have been possible without the support of our dealers, business partners, media, and colleagues,” said Emory Qi. “Local assembly will be a key milestone that brings us closer to customers while reinforcing our role as a regional hub for MG.”
He added, “Our assembly line will fully meet customer demand, ensuring a smoother and faster ownership experience. Most importantly, quality is non-negotiable. Every locally-assembled vehicle will under stringent global-level inspections through SAIC’s Quality Sustenance Programme.”

Hamidon said, “We are honoured to collaborate with SAIC Motor Malaysia in assembling our first fully-electric vehicle at our Melaka plant, a significant milestone for both EPMB and Malaysia’s EV landscape. Together, we aim to advance the nation’s EV ecosystem, accelerate localisation, and strengthen our value proposition for Malaysian customers.”
