Proton eMas 7 PHEV previewed: Up to 1,000 km, most fuel-efficient Proton ever?

Proton is on a roll with its electrified models – the Proton eMas 7, since its launch in December 2024, has been Malaysian’s best-selling EV, while the eMas 5 has amassed over 10,000 bookings since launch.

But that’s not all, as Proton is slated to further expand its eMas portfolio with the Proton eMas 7 PHEV (plug-in hybrid).

What is the Proton eMas 7 PHEV?

The Proton eMas 7 PHEV is essentially a rebadged version of the Geely Galaxy Starship 7. Outside of China, the model is sold as the Geely EX5 EM-i in Australia and Geely Starray EM-i in Indonesia.

Unlike other PHEV models and their turbocharged engines, the Starship 7 (and its rebadged siblings) feature a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that has been redesigned to offer a thermal efficiency of 46.5% – one of the highest for an internal combustion engine.

This engine is similar to the one found in the new 2026 Proton Saga MC3, but with more efficiency tweaks. Here, the BHE15-BFN outputs 111 PS and 136 Nm, mated to an 11-to-1 electrified dedicated hybrid transmission (E-DHT) that combines an integrated starter-generator and drive motor, allowing for a combined system output of 218 PS and 262 Nm of torque.

Per Proton’s presentation slides, the upcoming eMas 7 PHEV will offer a 0-100 km/h time of 8.0 seconds, whilst sipping 4.0L/100 km. When combined with its 51-litre fuel tank, the eMas 7 PHEV is able to return up to 1,065 km per tank (EV range: 100+ km, petrol range: 1,000+ km).

These hint that the eMas 7 PHEV could be fitted with the larger 19.09-kWh Aegis Short Blade LFP battery pack.

Similar to the eMas 7, the PHEV sibling is also developed on the Geely Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) platform.

At the ongoing Proton Tech Showcase, visitors can check out the Proton eMas 7 as well as other Proton technology and showcase.
