Better late than never, as Xpeng is currently in talks with EP Manufacturing Bhd to explore the possibility to locally-assemble (CKD) electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia. This is part of Xpeng’s plan of global expansion, with Malaysia set to be the strategic base for expansion in broader right-hand drive (RHD) markets.
According to a report by The Edge, Xpeng hopes to leverage on EPMB’s existing capacity and planned expansions for EV production in Malaysia.
That being said, details on output capacity and models set to be locally-assembled with EPMB were not disclosed.

Xpeng’s plan for Malaysia is in-line with its other initiatives earlier this year, as the Guangzhou-based EV specialist has already commenced local assembly work of the Xpeng X9 in Indonesia in July – their first overseas production facility.
Two months later in September, Magna Steyr announced that they will be manufacturing Xpeng models at its Graz facility in Austria, which is meant to help Xpeng bypass European Union tariffs on China-made EVs.
Malaysia is quickly becoming another manufacturing hub for Chinese makers in Southeast Asia after Thailand and Indonesia – BYD has plans to set up a plant in Perak, while Leapmotor will soon commence local assembly at the Stellantis plant in Gurun. Other players, like Wuling, has leveraged on the ETCM facility in Serendah, while MG has also signed with EPBM for CKD works.
