Stellantis has announced that they have commenced production of the Peugeot 408 at the Gurun plant, now with an updated turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine with Euro 6 rating.

The new Peugeot 408 will be exported to Taiwan as the third regional market, following Thailand in 2024 and Cambodia in 2025. Additional export markets across the Asia Pacific region are currently being evaluated for the export potential of the updated Peugeot 408.
According to Stellantis, the new 1.6-litre turbo petrol is good for 225 hp (228 PS), similar to the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) but without the PHEV powertrain’s added weight.
Supported by a €1.5 million investment, the Stellantis Gurun plant has undergone a manufacturing line upgrade, including specialised Research &Development for powertrain calibration and localised parts development.

Isaac Yeo, Managing Director of Stellantis ASEAN said, “Our vision to transform Gurun into a key regional driver is taking shape, supported by strategic investments to upgrade this vital facility for both local and export production. This latest development emphasises our commitment to scaling production outputs in Malaysia while extending the breadth of brands and models within the Stellantis portfolio to meet the diverse needs of the region.”
Stellantis aims to achieve full production capacity at its Gurun facility, targeting to export 280,000 vehicles to 20 countries across the Asia Pacific region by 2028. The growth is underpinned by a strategy for the Stellantis Gurun plant to accommodate the manufacturing of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), and Mild-hybrid Electric Vehicles (MHEV). This move also includes the local assembly work of Leapmotor vehicles.
