Well, this is an interesting development. Roughly six months after marking its debut in China, it appears that the Tesla Model Y L is headed overseas.

One such market is Australia, as CarExpert reported that the Tesla Model Y L has appeared in the Australian Government certification documents. This hints at a market launch Down Under in the near future. Plus, the unit shown here is a right-hand drive (RHD) unit.

And with any Tesla debut, the company typically introduces a new model around the same time across multiple markets, thus suggesting that Malaysia could be getting the Tesla Model Y L as soon as this year.

What is the Tesla Model Y L?

The L suffix in the name denotes that this is a long wheelbase version of the regular Model Y, adding 149 mm to the Model Y’s wheelbase, bring it to 3,040 mm. The Model Y L is also 179 mm longer than the regular Y, at 4,976 mm.

Inside, the 2+3 seating arrangement of the Tesla Model Y has been tweaked to a 2+2+2 seating arrangement, with the second-row seats offering a pair of captain seats with power-retractable arm rests.

The increase in wheelbase and vehicle length also resulted in a larger boot capacity, measuring 2,539 litres, as opposed to the Model Y’s 2,130 litres.

It remains to be seen what powertrain will be offered Down Under, but Tesla’s EU approval documents reveal that the Old Continent could be getting the Model Y L with an 88-kWh battery pack, offering a WLTP-rated range of 681 km.

Currently, the five-seater Tesla Model Y is priced between RM 195,450 for the Premium RWD variant, and tops out at RM 242,540 for the Premium Long Range AWD variant.
