New Isuzu D-Max with 2.2L Ddi MaxForce teased in Malaysia, launching soon?

Malaysia’s pick-up scene will soon be welcoming the updated Isuzu D-Max with the new 2.2 Ddi MaxForce engine. The registration of interest (ROI) page is now live, available here.

This new engine will supersede the long-serving 1.9-litre RZ4E-TC, which debuted here back in 2019. Codenamed RZ4F-TC, this new 2.2-litre turbodiesel churns out 163 PS and 400 Nm, marking a 13 PS and 50 Nm increase over the older 1.9-litre unit. The 3.0-litre unit will soldier on.

It’s not just a bigger engine, as the new RZ4F-TC features redesigned cylinders with a high-flow lubrication system and a high-swirl combustion chamber that is said to improve combustion efficiency. There’s also ultra-low-friction pistons, higher pressure 250 MPa direct injectors (up from 180 MPa), multi-core ECU, and an electronic variable geometry turbocharger.

Isuzu claims that the new engine is 10.7% more fuel efficient than the older 1.9-litre unit in extra-urban driving conditions. The new engine is also Euro 5-compliant.

The automatic transmission is also new – out goes the six-speed unit, now replaced by a new Aisin-sourced 8-speed unit.

While the powertrain is new, we expect the rest of the updated D-Max to be largely the same as before. The outgoing D-Max is priced as:

  • X-Terrain 3.0L 4×4 AT: From RM 161,938.40
  • Premium V-Cross 3.0L 4×4 AT: From RM 144,138.40
  • Premium 1.9L 4×4 AT: From RM 137,649.20
  • Standard 1.9L 4×4 AT: From RM 118,999.20
  • Standard 1.9L 4×4 MT: From RM 111,599.20
  • Auto Plus 1.9L 4×2 AT: From RM 111,499.20
  • Single Cab 3.0L 4×4 MT: From RM 107,888.40
  • Single Cab 1.9L 4×4 MT: From RM 100,949.20
