BYD CKD Kulim with Sime? BYD management team visits Inokom plant

Given the recent fiasco between MITI and BYD, it seems like the latter could soon locally-assemble (CKD) their cars at the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah.

Over the weekend, BYD’s Vice President and General Manager of APAC Auto Sales Division Liu Xueliang was in town to officiate the new BYD Mansion Macalister showroom.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5yVdy2UaUY

During the event, he said, “We noticed that the Malaysian government has released new policies regarding new energy vehicles (NEV). As a responsible technology company, we will continue to bring our best technologies and products to Malaysia.”

“Together with the relevant authorities of the Malaysian government and our distributor and dealer partners, we will find the most suitable NEV development solutions for the Malaysian market,” he added.

Now that BYD’s management team has visited the Inokom plant, it could signal that the company may be engaging Sime Motors to be their local contract-assembly partner for Malaysia, mirroring a similar arrangement where brands like MG, Xpeng, and GWM engaged EPMB to CKD their models.
