The Itala 35 is a GAC GS3 Emzoom in a fancy Italian suit

After 92 long years, the Itala brand is making a comeback with the Itala 35. The Itala 35 is a B-segment SUV developed under the DR Group’s Historic Italian Brands project. The exterior design was handled by Italdesign, with the car unveiled on 21 May 2026 in Moncalieri.

Now, if the Itala 35 looks familiar, that’s because this new “Italian” car is essentially a reskinned GAC GS3 Emzoom.

Despite being GS3 Emzoom underneath, the Italians pointed out that they handled the exterior design, electronics, suspension system, and system integration.

Furthermore, Italdesign design input involved the front and rear ends, with a complete redesign of non-structural plastic parts including the bumpers, upper bonnet fascia, tailgate, and spoiler.

Lights were retained from the GS3 Emzoom and integrated into the new design. The front grille was identified as the centrepiece of the new visual identity, with the mesh design incorporating references to the Itala brand and the city of Turin.

Italdesign’s touches also carry into the cabin – despite much of the Itala 35’s being carried over from the GS3 Emzoom, Italdesign gave this B-SUV leather sourced from Italian tanneries. There’s also Alcantara that Italdesign sourced from Italy.

Apart from the Itala 35, the company also stated that there are plans for an additional two more models: Itala 56 which is a C-segment SUV and Itala 61, a 7-seater SUV.
