Malaysia’s premium MPV segment will soon welcome another rival in the form of the 2025 GWM Wey G9 – a model that’s sold as the Wey 80 in other markets.
Set to be locally assembled (CKD) at EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB)’s facility in Melaka, the 2025 GWM Wey G9 will likely be the first CKD PHEV MPV to go on sale in Malaysia with an estimated price of below RM 300,000.
The 2025 GWM Wey G9 will also make its right-hand drive (RHD) debut here, with plans for exports to other regional markets like Thailand and Indonesia already in the pipeline.

Overview

At the heart of the 2025 GWM Wey G9 lies a petrol-electric hybrid system, comprised of a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 150 PS and 240 Nm and two electric motors. Combined system output is 325 kW (442 PS) and 642 Nm. As the Hi-4 name suggests, the MPV is all-wheel drive (AWD) and offers EV, EV Priority, and Smart Hybrid driving modes.

The dual electric motors are juiced by a 44.2-kWh ternary lithium battery pack, which supports DC fast charging (30% to 80% state-of-charge (SoC) in just 26 minutes) and 6.6 kW AC charging (15% to 100% SoC in 6.5 hours).
According to GWM, the 2025 Wey G9 sprints from 0–100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, with a top speed of 200 km/h. It also offers a pure electric range of 170 km under the NEDC test cycle, while total driving range can reach up to 1,000 km.

With a 58-litre fuel tank, the estimated fuel consumption figure works out to about 5.8 litres/100 km (17.24 km/L).
Exterior

The 2025 GWM Wey G9 looks every bit a premium MPV with its large chrome grille up front, complete with 25 vertical slats. The grille also integrates the front camera and millimetre-wave radar, while the front parking sensors are housed in the lower air intake.

Flanking the grille are projector LED headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRLs). L-shaped chrome garnishes beneath the headlights complete the front fascia.

From the side, the Wey G9 rides on 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels wrapped in 245/50R18 tyres. The preview unit was fitted with Michelin Primacy 5 Energy tyres, though it remains to be seen if customer cars will receive the same specification.

At the rear, the Wey G9 sports a full-width LED tail light with vertical light bars at the corners. Chrome accents are limited to the rear bumper, where the diffuser element gets a chrome surround.
In terms of dimensions, the Wey G9 measures 5,050 mm long, 1,960 mm wide, 1,900 mm tall, and sits on a 3,085 mm wheelbase.
For context, below is a table comparing the Weh G9 against other popular MPVs.

Interior
Although this is GWM’s first attempt at a premium MPV, the company has put considerable thought into its execution.

The cabin is upholstered in Nappa leather, while the second row features zero-gravity seats with one-button reset, ventilation (seat cushion + backrest), and 10-point massage zones.

A 12.5-litre dual-opening fridge sits between the front seats, accessible via a front armrest opening for the driver and passenger, and a rear drawer for second-row occupants. The fridge features a two-tier design, with a temperature range of 0°C to 50°C across three modes: Cooling (0°C–15°C), Heating (35°C–50°C), and Fresh-keeping (10°C).

Flexibility is aided by sliding tracks for both second- and third-row seats, expanding luggage space from 233 litres to 1,725 litres.
Safety & Technology
The Wey G9’s structure incorporates 81.95% high-strength steel, 2,000 MPa ultra-high-strength steel in the A- and B-pillars, and a reinforced third-row seatback with a tube-frame skeleton.

The body offers 12-tonne roof crush resistance, achieved through a load-bearing body design, four longitudinal and seven crossmember floor frame structures, a closed door-ring design, and hot-stamped front cross beam.

Additionally, the G9 features China’s first hot-blow-formed 1,500 MPa tube integrated into the A-pillar, providing triple the strength of regular beams whilst maintaining visibility. Think of it like a built-in roll cage for the A-pillar.

Battery safety is equally rigorous, featuring four-layer side impact protection, six-layer bottom protection, and advanced sealing against high-pressure water exposure. In total, the battery pack has passed 89 tests — covering performance, reliability, and safety — with zero failures recorded.
Conclusion

With Malaysia’s premium MPV segment heating up, the 2025 GWM Wey G9 looks set to shake up the market as the first locally-assembled (CKD) PHEV MPV.
Offering strong performance, impressive on-paper efficiency, and topped up with premium features, the 2025 GWM Wey G9 could become an appealing option for families seeking both comfort and long-distance capability.
Now that GWM has previewed the Wey G9, it’s only a matter of time before the model launches here. Stay tuned for that.
