Targeted RON95 petrol subsidy – RM 1.99/litre from 30-Sept, MyKad or app

Targeted RON95 petrol subsidy to start soon

Everyone’s long-awaited moment is almost here, as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that starting 30-September 2025, the targeted RON95 petrol subsidy will commence, which sees the price of RON95 petrol being reduce to RM 1.99/litre from the current RM 2.05/litre.

Update: The government has updated by stating that driving license can also be used to verify and purchase subsidised RON95 petrol.

According to the Prime Minister, the new price will take effect from 30-September 2025, but these two groups can enjoy the lower prices earlier:

  • Police and army personnel from 27-September 2025
  • Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) recipients from 28-September 2025

Additionally, the lower RM 1.99/litre price is for all Malaysians (seluruh rakyat Malaysia, per the PM’s Facebook post).

To enjoy the targeted RON95 petrol subsidy, registration is not required – Malaysians can just use their MyKad at petrol kiosks, or use their respective petrol refueling app, ie Setel by Petronas. MyKad readers will be installed at petrol kiosks to ease the workload. The Touch ‘n Go eWallet app can also be used for payment.

Without the subsidy, the price of RON95 petrol will be adjusted weekly according to market price, similar to RON97 and diesel prices. At the time of writing, the unsubsidised price of RON95 is hovering between RM 2.57 to 2.74 (according to Double Petrol).

“These benefits and privileges are given as an appreciation and recognition of the spirit of National Day and Malaysia Day, as well as to honour all Malaysians.

“Starting Sept 30, non-citizens and large companies will no longer be eligible for the subsidy, as it is meant solely for personal use. They will have to pay the non-subsidised price of about RM2.60 per litre, while Malaysian citizens will continue to enjoy the subsidised price of RM1.99 per litre,” he told The Star.
