Toyota has just pulled the covers off the new 2026 Toyota Hilux Travo. Now in its ninth-generation, the new Hilux replaces its predecessor that has been around since 2015.
Overview

For the Thai market, the ninth-generation Hilux will adopt the Travo name, thus creating variants like the Hilux Travo PreRunner, Hilux Travo 4TREX, and Hilux Travo-e – the latter is the first-ever Hilux EV. The Travo-e maintains what makes a Hilux, a Hilux, offering the core capabilities of a body-on-frame pick-up truck: off-road articulation, towing, and payload capacity.
Prices start from THB 899,000 (~RM 115k) for the 2026 Toyota Hilux Travo, while the Hilux Travo Overland starts from THB 1,102,000 (~RM 142k).
The fully-electric Hilux Travo-e start from THB 1,491,000 (~RM 192k).
Exterior

Compared to the previous-generation Hilux, the new 2026 Hilux gets a very angular front fascia, one that encompasses angles and sharp edges.
The LED headlights (on upper variants) sit at the upper most spot of the front-end, with the Toyota script sitting in between the slim headlights. The front fog lights are positioned at the very lowest point, at each corner.

Beneath that is a large two-layer air intake (upper piece blank on the EV variant), while large angular trim pieces at each edge give the Hilux a more rugged appeal. The charging port of the Hilux EV is located on the left side of the vehicle.

Towards the rear-end, there’s a large Toyota script embedded into the tailgate, with a pair of redesigned LED tail lights at each end, replete with LED light bar.
Mirroring earlier generation models, the Hilux Travo continues to offer various body styles, including Double Cab, Single Cab, and Smart Cab.
Ground clearance of the 2026 Hilux Travo varies: the PreRunner and Overland variants offer up to 225 mm of ground clearance, while the Standard Cab’s ground clearance is rated at 217 mm. As for the Hilux EV, despite carrying a battery pack, still offers a very respectable 215 mm of ground clearance.
Interior

Like the exterior, Toyota has completely overhauled the cabin of the new 2026 Toyota Hilux. Much of the dashboard is heavily inspired from the US-market Toyota 4Runner, including the blocky design theme, free-standing infotainment display, while the steering wheel looks to be similar to the Toyota Land Cruiser.

In terms of usability, Toyota has given the Hilux three dials for air-conditioning controls, with USB-C ports nestled below. There’s also physical buttons for various controls and cubby holes for storage. There’s also the customary fully-digital instrument cluster, which for the first time ever, is offered across all variants of the Hilux Travo.

Additionally, the 2026 Hilux Travo is the first Hilux to offer an electric parking brake (EPB). This feature is reserved for upper variants of the Hilux; lower variants still get the regular mechanical hand brake.

Powertrain

At the heart of the new 2026 Toyota Hilux is a carried-over 2.8-litre turbodiesel that outputs 204 PS from 3,000 to 3,400 rpm and 500 Nm from 1,600 rpm to 2,800 rpm (MT variants make do with just 420 Nm). The older 2.4-litre oil burner has been discontinued.
Also carried over is the six-speed transmission, both in automatic and manual form.

As for the first-ever Hilux EV, it gets dual electric motors for a combined system output of 144 kW (196 PS). The front electric motor has a torque rating of 205.5 Nm, while the rear motor’s torque is rated at 268.6 Nm.
The Hilux Travo-e is powered by a 59.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, allowing for a maximum range of 315 km under the NEDC test cycle. DC fast charging goes up to 125 kW, while AC charging maxes out at 10 kW.

Additionally, selected variants also get Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) and Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) for improved visibility.
What about Malaysia?
Now that the covers are uncovered, it is only matter of time before the new 2026 Toyota Hilux Travo arrives here. After all, with the pick-up segment in Malaysia heating up with new models, the refreshed Hilux needs to arrive here sooner than later to maintain its top sales spot.
