Proton eMas 7 PHEV full specs: GMA platform, up to 1,000 km NEDC range

Proton recently organised a preview session for the upcoming Proton eMas 7 PHEV, the car maker’s first attempt at a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

What is the Proton eMas 7 PHEV?

As the name suggests, the Proton eMas 7 PHEV is the plug-in hybrid version of the popular, battery electric vehicle (BEV) eMas 7.

Said model was first shown to the public at the Proton Tech Showcase back in early-December.

Like the eMas 5 and eMas 7, the upcoming Proton eMas 7 PHEV is a rebadged Geely model. In this case, the Geely Galaxy Starship 7 (also sold as the Geely Starray EM-i in Australia and Indonesia).

The Proton eMas 7 PHEV is developed on the same GMA platform that also underpins the Proton eMas 7, featuring MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear suspension at the rear.

What powertrain does the Proton eMas 7 PHEV offer?

Setting the regular eMas 7 apart from its PHEV sibling is the powertrain, as the PHEV sibling adds a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine to the mix.

Codenamed BHE15-BFN, this engine is a derivative of the one found in the Proton Saga MC3, though re-engineered for better fuel efficiency. Export markets of this engine produces 99 PS and 125 Nm, which should be similar to what the eMas 7 PHEV produces.

The front-mounted 11-to-1 electrified dedicated hybrid transmission (E-DHT) that combines an integrated starter-generator and drive motor, allowing for a combined system output of 218 PS and 262 Nm of torque.

Proton says that the fuel efficiency of the Proton eMas 7 PHEV is at 4.3 L/100 km (23.25 km/L), under the NEDC cycle.

For the Malaysian market, Proton will be offering two battery sizes on the eMas 7 PHEV: 29.8-kWh and 18.4-kWh. Both batteries are of the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) type, utilising the Geely Aegis Short Blade technology.

In the case of the former, it offers a pure electric range of up to 170 km under the less stringent NEDC test cycle, while the latter offers up to 105 km under the same test cycle. The camouflaged car that you see here also touts an NEDC range of up to 1,065 km.

The Australian-market Starray EM-i, which gets the smaller 18.4-kWh battery pack, returns a WLTP range of 943 km.

As for recharging, the larger capacity unit accepts up to 60-kWh of DC charging, enabling a 30% to 80% state-of-charge (SoC) to be achieved under 16 minutes. The smaller capacity battery pack accepts up to 30 kW of DC charging, with the same 30% to 80% charge taking less than 20 minutes.
