2026 BMW i3 NA0 debuts: Second Neue Klasse EV offers 900 km range, sixth-gen eDrive with dual motors

BMW has officially unveiled the all-new 2026 BMW i3 NA0, marking the second model in the brand’s transformative Neue Klasse lineup. Following the debut of the NA5 BMW iX3, this fully electric 3 Series represents a technological quantum leap for one of BMW’s most iconic nameplates.

Production of the i3 will commence at the BMW Group plant in Munich from August 2026, with the first customer deliveries scheduled for autumn 2026. By 2027, the Munich facility will transition to exclusively producing Neue Klasse electric vehicles.

Exterior – Neue Klasse design language meets iconic 3 Series DNA

The new BMW i3 embodies the Neue Klasse design language whilst retaining the unmistakable character of the BMW 3 Series. The modern 2.5-box design showcases precise lines, distinctive surfaces, and the hallmark sporty proportions that have defined the 3 Series for five decades.

Measuring 4,760 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,480 mm tall with a 2,897 mm wheelbase, the i3 features a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a greenhouse that slopes towards the rear. The prominently flared wheel arches emphasise the sporty, wide stance, while concealed seals create a harmonious transition between glass surfaces and bodywork.

Up front, the iconic BMW four-eyed face receives a contemporary interpretation. The BMW radiator grille and twin headlights merge seamlessly with front sensors, creating a unified visual element with a horizontal light signature spanning nearly the entire width. The optional BMW Iconic Glow exterior package offers three customisable lighting animations: Balanced, Relaxed, and Excited.

At the rear, strongly horizontal L-shaped tail lamps feature a new three-dimensional light signature, extending into the prominent shoulders to reflect precision and technological progress. Standard 21-inch M 1067 M Aerodynamic wheels further enhance the vehicle’s athletic appearance.

Eleven exterior colours will be available at launch, including the exclusive M Le Castellet Blue metallic finish.

Interior – Driver-focused cockpit with BMW Panoramic iDrive

The BMW i3’s interior brings the Neue Klasse design language to life with dynamic, airy, and modern aesthetics. Central to the experience is BMW Panoramic iDrive, a revolutionary display and operating system that redefines driver orientation.

Four key elements merge into this unique system: the BMW Panoramic Vision projects driving-relevant information across the entire lower section of the windscreen from A-pillar to A-pillar. The optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display provides spatial perception for navigation and driver assistance information. The 17.9-inch Free-Cut Design Central Display with matrix backlight technology sits angled 3 degrees towards the driver, while the redesigned multifunction steering wheel features Shy Tech controls with haptic feedback.

The instrument panel flows horizontally into dynamically designed door panels, creating an enveloping wrap-around effect. An optional panoramic roof with climate comfort glass, combined with large window areas, creates a spacious, light-flooded cabin.

Sporty and elegant seats come standard with electrically operated adjustments and a Travel & Comfort system. Optional multifunction seats and BMW M Sport seats with distinctive side sections provide enhanced lateral support. Four interior designs are available: Essential with Econeer in Vivid Grey, Contemporary with Veganza in Agave Green/Digital White/Castanea/Black, BMW M Design World with Veganza and M Performtex in Black, and BMW Individual with exclusive Merino leather in black.

Powertrain – Sixth-gen BMW eDrive with 800V architecture, 10-min charge adds 400 km

The BMW i3 50 xDrive utilises sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, representing a fundamental leap in electric propulsion. Dual motors combine for a system output of 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in under 5 seconds.

The rear-mounted electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) forms the primary drive, while an asynchronous motor (ASM) on the front axle provides all-wheel capability. This combination reduces energy losses by 40 percent, cuts drive system weight by 10 percent, and lowers manufacturing costs by 20 percent compared to the previous generation.

Powering the system is a new 800-volt high-voltage battery featuring newly developed lithium-ion round cells (46 mm diameter, 95 mm height) with 20 percent higher volumetric energy density than Gen5 prismatic cells. The cell-to-pack design integrates cells directly into the battery without modular construction, enabling high energy densities and a flat design. The pack-to-open-body construction sees the battery housing function as a structural component, saving weight and improving torsional rigidity.

Range reaches up to 900 km (WLTP provisional), while DC charging capabilities of up to 400 kW enable dramatic recharging speeds, adding up to 400 km of range in just 10 minutes at compatible fast chargers. Standard AC charging is 11 kW, with optional 22 kW available.

The i3 also features bidirectional charging functions: Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) provides up to 3.7 kW for external devices, Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) allows the car to serve as home energy storage with the BMW Wallbox Professional, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) enables feeding energy back to the power grid in partnership with E.ON.

Technology – Heart of Joy computer is 10x faster, BMW Symbiotic Drive

The BMW i3 introduces a quad-superbrain electronics platform with four specialised high-performance computers offering up to 20 times higher computing power than previous BMW models. At the core sits the Heart of Joy, which manages driving dynamics, brakes, steering functions, charging and recuperation at speeds ten times faster than conventional systems.

This enables 98 percent of routine braking to be handled via recuperation, with the new Soft-Stop feature ensuring the smoothest stopping process in BMW history. The four-zone cabling architecture and Smart eFuses reduce cable complexity, save weight, and improve overall vehicle efficiency.

BMW Symbiotic Drive represents a new approach to driver assistance, designed for seamless interaction between human input and AI. The Level 2 systems allow drivers to accelerate, steer or brake even when assistance is engaged, without instant deactivation. Driving Assistant Plus manages speed, distance, and lane keeping, while automatically detecting speed limits and adjusting before curves, roundabouts and turns.

BMW Operating System X powers the Panoramic iDrive, based on Android Open Source Project (AOSP) with high update and upgrade capability. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant integrates Amazon’s Alexa+ Large Language Model (LLM) technology, enabling more natural dialogue-oriented voice interactions. The BMW Digital Key Plus supports smartphones and smartwatches from Apple, Samsung, and Google, using ultra-wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth for secure vehicle access.

The BMW i3 leverages its electric architecture for optimal driving dynamics. The flat high-voltage battery enables a low centre of gravity, while standard stroke-dependent shock absorbers work with a two-joint spring strut front axle and a new five-link rear axle. Front and rear anti-roll bars with highly preloaded bearings enhance dynamic handling.

An optional adaptive M suspension is available on the all-wheel-drive i3 50 xDrive, boosting sporty dynamics while maintaining ride comfort. The Heart of Joy’s ten-times-faster response rate delivers exceptionally effortless and assured handling, with precise cornering that maximises accuracy while requiring fewer control interventions.

When will the 2026 BMW i3 arrive in Malaysia?

BMW Malaysia has yet to confirm local availability, but given the brand’s commitment to electrification and the 3 Series’ strong market presence, a Malaysian introduction could follow after European and North American launches.
