Just moments ago, BMW took the covers off the brand-spanking-new 2026 BMW iX3, codenamed NA5. This marks a significant milestone in BMW’s EV journey, as the NA5 iX3 marks the first model to be developed under BMW’s Neue Klasse umbrella.

Production of the iX3 will begin at the purpose-built BMW Group Plant Debrecen in Hungary, with the first customer deliveries scheduled for Europe in spring 2026. North America will follow in summer 2026, alongside a China-specific version (long wheelbase?) assembled at the Shenyang facility.

Exterior – 2026 BMW iX3 heralds the Neue Klasse design language

The new iX3 introduces BMW’s next-generation Neue Klasse design language, blending the robustness of a BMW X model with an uncluttered, modern aesthetic.

Measuring 4,782 mm long, 1,895 mm wide and 1,635 mm tall on a 2,897 mm wheelbase, the 2026 BMW iX3 maintains the familiar two-box BMW Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) silhouette while optimising proportions for interior space. Flush-fitting glass surfaces, integrated door handles and a drag coefficient of just 0.24 contribute to a sleek yet modern look.

Up front, the classic BMW four-eyed face is reinterpreted with a vertically oriented kidney grille framed by an Iconic Glow illumination and a new horizontal light signature that replaces traditional chrome.

Towards the rear, a tapered roofline and multi-layered L-shaped tail lamps create an unmistakable look. As standard, the 2026 BMW iX3 gets 20-inch alloys, with optional wheels sizing up to 22 inches with aero-optimised “Air Performance” designs.

Five metallic colours launch alongside a solid finish, with Polarized Grey and Ocean Wave Blue offered exclusively on the iX3.

Interior – Funky infotainment display gets Operating System X

Central to the cockpit is BMW Panoramic iDrive, merging the Panoramic Vision display, a 17.9-inch Central Display, an optional 3D Head-Up Display and a shy-tech multifunction steering wheel with haptic feedback. The system runs on BMW Operating System X (Not to be confused with Apple’s Mac OS X), enabling seamless personalisation, widget-based quick access, and over-the-air software updates.

Beneath the funky-shaped infotainment display is a “floating” dashboard flows seamlessly into wide-spanning door panels, producing a wrap-around effect accentuated by optional ambient backlighting. A panoramic glass roof and generous glazing bathe the cabin in natural light, creating a lounge-like ambience for all five occupants.

The newly designed slimline seats combine long-distance comfort with strong lateral support and can be trimmed in a range of materials, from recycled Econeer fabric to Veganza/M PerformTex and BMW Individual Merino leather. Rear passengers benefit from noticeably improved legroom over the outgoing model.

Boot space of the 2026 BMW iX3 is generous too – with the rear seats up, this EV SUV offers 520 litres of boot space. With the rear seats folded down, usable space increases to 1,750 litres. There’s also a 58-litre frunk.

Powertrain – First BMW to offer an 800-volt system, 10 min charge gets 372 km range

At launch, the iX3 will be offered in 50 xDrive guise, utilising dual motors for a combined 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque. The sprint from 0–100 km/h takes just 4.9 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 210 km/h. An 800-volt electrical architecture supports the new Gen6 108.7-kWh cylindrical-cell nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery, delivering a provisional WLTP range of up to 805 km.

Charging performance is equally next-generation. At a 400-kW DC charging station, the iX3 can gain up to 372 km of range in just 10 minutes, while a 10–80% state-of-charge (SoC) top-up takes roughly 21 minutes.

As standard, the BMW iX3 offers 11 kW AC charging. The 22-kW onboard charger is a cost option. From 2026 onward, the vehicle will also support bidirectional functions including Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), effectively turning the SAV into a mobile energy source.

Technology – Heart of Joy computer is 10x faster than regular ECUs

The iX3 introduces a quad-“superbrain” electronics platform that underpins everything from power delivery to driver assistance (ADAS). At its core, the “Heart of Joy” control unit controls drivetrain, braking and recuperation at speeds up to ten times faster than conventional ECUs, allowing 98% of routine braking to be handled via energy regeneration alone.

BMW’s next-generation driver aids, including Highway Assistant and City Assistant with traffic light recognition, work hand-in-hand with the Symbiotic Drive software to blend human input and AI in real time. Adaptive cruise control, lane centering control and hands-off motorway guidance all contribute to a smoother, less fatiguing drive. Over-the-air updates ensure these capabilities evolve throughout the car’s lifecycle.

On the infotainment side, BMW Operating System X supports Digital Key Plus, in-car video streaming (Disney+, YouTube), AirConsole gaming, Zoom video calls and a fully customisable My Modes suite for tailoring drive feel and ambience.

Sustainability – More recycled materials than before

Sustainability is integral to the BMW Neue Klasse family of models. BMW claims a 34% lower lifecycle CO₂ footprint for the 2026 BMW iX3 versus its predecessor at over 200,000 km when charged on the EU grid, with parity against a comparable petrol X3 after just 21,500 km. Charging exclusively on renewables reduces that break-even to 17,500 km.

Material choices further reinforce BMW’s commitment: 30% recycled marine plastic in under-bonnet components, 100% recycled PET for Econeer textiles, and 80% secondary aluminium in key suspension parts. Manufacturing at Plant Debrecen is designed to operate fossil-free under normal conditions.

When will the 2026 BMW iX3 arrive in Malaysia?

BMW Malaysia has yet to confirm a launch date, but given the current iX3’s popularity and BMW’s aggressive EV roll-out locally, a 2026 arrival could be on the cards. The combination of 800-volt charging, bidirectional charging capability and over-800 km range positions the new 2026 BMW iX3 as a serious contender in the premium EV SUV segment.
