Next-gen Subaru WRX STI imagined: Long live the STI

The performance car market may be a niche, but that has not stopped Subaru from forging on with new iterations of its ever-popular WRX STI.

Seen here are patent images of what could be the next-generation (VC?) Subaru WRX STI, dug out from the Japan Platform for Patent Information by Top Gear Philippines. Recall that the current-generation WRX, that debuted in 2022, is codenamed VB. It’s not a stretch to call the upcoming new generation VC, then.

Despite ever-tightening emission regulations, Subaru dropped a teaser of the Subaru Performance-B Concept at the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show. Despite being a concept car, the design is quite similar to the patent images dug out by Top Gear Philippines, hinting that Subaru could very well be working on the new-generation model and not canning the model altogether.

Adding to that, Subaru Australia General Manager Scott Lawrence told Drive.com.au, “There has been a significant volume of feedback. The tempo of news and activity out of STI publicly is picking up. It has the most vocal followers of the Subaru camp, put it that way. As those concepts proved, lots of work in that space – STI isn’t dead.”

We went further and gave our resident AI bot some work to do, in which it came up with these images of what the production version of the next-gen WRX STI could look like.
