Upgraded Denza D9 to launch in China soon, 10% to 97% charge in 9 minutes

Perhaps one of the most popular electric MPVs on sale today, the Denza D9, will be receiving a product update in China on 29-March.

According to Autohome, BYD will debut the updated Denza D9 in China on 29-March, featuring BYD’s second generation Blade battery and Flash Charging capabilities.

Furthermore, this upgraded Denza D9 is said to offer even more range than the current model – the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant can offer a pure electric range of more than 400 km, while the pure electric version can travel more than 800 km. Though not mentioned, these figures are likely under the less stringent CLTC test cycle.

For reference, the current PHEV Denza D9, which isn’t on sale in Malaysia, offers a pure electric range of up to 155 km (WLTP), while the EV variant offers a range of up to 520 km (WLTP).

Power output has also increased – in the Denza D9 PHEV, the petrol engine’s output has increased to 156 PS (115 kW), while the front motor’s output has been uprated to 200 kW (272 PS). As for the AWD variant with the rear-mounted electric motor, said motor output remains the same at 45 kW (62 PS).

The power output increase is also carried over to the Denza D9 EV – the front motor’s output is now rated at 340 kW (462 PS) for front-wheel drive variants. As for the AWD variant, the rear-motor now does 70 kW (95 PS).

Like the recently-updated BYD Atto 3, the improved Denza D9 features the second-generation Blade battery, allowing for a 10% to 70% state-of-charge (SoC) to be achieved in just 5 minutes, while the 10% to 97% charge requiring just 9 minutes.

Even without a BYD-compatible Flash Charger, BYD mentioned that the second-generation Blade battery can charge at regular charging points 30% to 50% quicker than before.

In terms of design, the updated Denza D9 features a redesigned front grille that replaces the vertical slats with blocky elements, resembling the current-generation Toyota Alphard. The rest of the updated Denza D9 appear to be similar to the current model.
