Malaysia’s first dual-powered EV almost definitely needs recharging and refuelling

Launched back in February 2026, the Proton eMas 7 PHEV debuted as Malaysia’s first dual-powered EV, priced between RM 105,800 to RM 125,800.

Yes, dual-powered, as Proton mentioned that the eMas 7 PHEV can be powered either by its naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine or its front-mounted electric motor.

For the latter, power is derived from a LFP battery pack, with capacities varying depending on variant. In the case of the top-spec Premium Plus variant, it gets a large 29.8-kWh Geely Aegis short blade LFP battery pack.

Now, with any vehicle with a battery pack, the question remains “Do I need to charge the battery pack?”

During a recent technical workshop and Q&A session, Pro-Net and Geely engineers revealed that while yes, you can technically use the Proton eMas 7 PHEV as a regular internal combustion engine (ICE) car, that’s not the point with a plug-in hybrid vehicle.

As a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the eMas 7 PHEV works best when there’s charge in the battery, allowing it to cover short journeys purely with the electric motor. And with the petrol engine, it fills in the gaps when the battery is low, thus reducing range anxiety for long distance journeys.

That said, Pro-Net do recommend owners to charge up the vehicle whenever possible (it’s still a PHEV after all), which also helps to recalibrate the battery. Battery degradation is real, but Pro-Net has reiterated that the eMas 7 PHEV has sufficient protection mechanisms built-in to handle that. A charge once a month is sufficient to recalibate the LFP battery pack.

In short, the eMas 7 PHEV is best when the battery pack is charged, and fuel tank filled up, allowing both systems to function as intended.

With a total range of almost 1,000 km WLTP, the eMas 7 PHEV overcomes the regular eMas 7 EV’s range with ease, but just remember that you need to charge and refuel to get the most out of the car.
