In line with the government’s push to improve road safety and champion sustainable mobility, Proton has launched the Proton Xchange Programme, a new initiative that encourages owners of unroadworthy vehicles to trade them in for a brand-new Proton model. This initiative is in partnership with Car Medic Sdn Bhd, an authorised automotive treatment facility (AATF), and is open to all vehicle owners regardless of brand.
The launch event took place at the Proton Centre of Excellence in Subang Jaya and was officiated by YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport. Representing Proton were Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar, Chairman, and Dr. Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer. The event was also attended by representatives from Car Medic, the Ministry of Transport (MOT), the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), and the Malaysian Automotive Robotics & IoT Institute (MARii).
Proton commits RM4.8 million to drive greener mobility
To deliver on its goals of enhancing road safety and promoting environmental sustainability, Proton and Car Medic have developed a comprehensive approach that provides attractive incentives while ensuring the proper disposal of old vehicles. Under the programme, Proton will provide RM2,000 in overtrade value toward the purchase of a new Proton vehicle, including the best-selling EV, the Proton e.MAS 7. A total of RM4.8 million has been allocated for this pilot programme, which will run until the end of December 2025.
Eligible vehicles must be at least 15 years old and assessed as uneconomical to repair or unsafe for continued use. Qualified vehicles include sedans, MPVs, vans, 4x4s, lorries, and buses, subject to specific terms and conditions, including valid proof of ownership.

To receive the incentive, customers must register their new Proton or Proton e.MAS vehicle before the end of the year. Additionally, they must provide a Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC), a completed JPJK1KD form confirming deregistration by the JPJ, and a Certificate of Destruction (COD) issued by Car Medic. Notably, the new vehicle can also be registered under a next of kin’s name, offering added flexibility for participants.
Car Medic, certified by the Department of Environment and appointed by JPJ as an AATF since 2020, provides seamless e-Dereg services either on-site or at their facility. Their services include restriction checks, deregistration, towing, safe disposal, and COD issuance. MyKad holders in select areas can complete deregistration digitally at their vehicle’s location, and Car Medic also supports group e-Deregistration for five or more vehicles within two working days.
Proton leads the way in mobility transition
As the only Malaysian carmaker offering internal combustion engine (ICE), mild-hybrid, and fully electric vehicles, Proton is uniquely positioned to lead the shift toward a cleaner and safer automotive future. With more new models and a second EV set to be launched, the company is committed to supporting Malaysia’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

During the launch, YB Anthony Loke expressed strong support for the initiative, stating, “The Ministry of Transport applauds the Xchange Programme and urges other automotive manufacturers to emulate Proton’s leadership by prioritising environmental responsibility over short-term gains. In recognition of this effort, we are offering a first-year road tax exemption for all vehicles purchased through this initiative. Once again, Malaysia’s first automotive company is setting the benchmark for change.”
Echoing the Minister’s comments, Dr. Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton, added, “The Proton Xchange Programme is a crucial step toward a more sustainable and safer automotive landscape in Malaysia. It underscores our ongoing commitment to customer safety, innovation, and environmental stewardship. We hope this initiative will inspire more Malaysians to transition to safer, more advanced vehicles.”
