For the third month in a row, Proton May 2025 sales have recorded an improvement, with a total of 13,328 units sold. The record figure includes domestic and export sales, smart, and Proton eMas.
How well was Proton May 2025 sales?
According to Proton, the last three months (March to May), year-on-year (YoY) figures have grown by 10%, driving year-to-date (YTD) sales to 61,087 units. Additionally, the increase in sales also bumped up Proton’s market share to roughly 19.2%, from an estimated Total Industry Volume (TIV) of 69,495 units.
The biggest volume drivers are the Proton X50 and Proton X70, which have been selling well since the launch of their updated models in 2024.
Export sales of Proton have also been strong, now 36.6% ahead of 2024, while the Proton eMAS 7 continues to top EV sales for a fifth consecutive month in May 2025 while surpassing the 900-unit sales number for the first time.
In terms of sales growth, the Proton X70 was the biggest gainer, which saw the 7-year-old C-segment SUV added 44% to end the month at 982 units. As such, the X70 now enjoys a 53.1% lead in YTD sales from 2024.

The Proton X70’s smaller SUV sibling, the Proton X50, also added another 2,198 units to bump its YTD sales to 9,704 units, effectively conquering the B-segment SUV segment. It also marks a 14.3% increase from its total in 2024.
It’s a similar story for the D-segment Proton X90, which saw sales increase by 15.5% to 224 units, cementing its lead in the segment, while the Proton S70 closed May 2025 with a total of 1,763 units sold.
As for Proton’s homegrown models, the Proton Saga closed May 2025 with a total of 5,513 units sold, an increase of 5.8% compared to April. The Proton Persona, on the other hand, saw 1,385 units sold in May, a bump of 4.3%. As for the Proton Iriz, this B-segment hatchback’s sales grew by 14.1% to 331 units, being the fourth most popular model in Malaysia.
The Proton eMas 7, the company’s first-ever EV, saw a total of 916 units sold in May, both domestically and export. That figure has bumped the YTD sales to a total of 3,632 units.

This is a direct result of our promotion efforts as well as the strong attraction car buyers have to our range that offers stylish, technology driven products sold via an industry leading network of 3S/4S outlets. Going into the second half of 2025, Proton is confident we can maintain our momentum as we initiate a flurry of events and model introductions in line with the next phase of our overall business plan,” said Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer, Proton.
With the domestic market reaching a saturation point, Proton is now diverting its attention to export markets. In this year alone, Proton has been promoting its models overseas, including the CKD Proton Saga in LHD form in Egypt, as well as the Proton eMas7 launches in Nepal and Singapore.
This month, Proton will introduce the Proton eMas 7 in Trinidad & Tobago, which should increase its export numbers beyond 233 units.
So far, the Proton Saga remains as the top export model, with a total of 710 units, followed by the Proton X50, which has improved its YTD export sales by 360% to 694 units.
“The increased focus placed on growing export sales is paying short term dividends as we see an immediate uptick in volume. Penetrating and being successful in overseas markets requires long-term commitment and Proton is confident we can achieve our goals with a structured plan to manage our expansion,” added Li Chunrong.
