This is it – the Toyota Vios, for the first-time ever, gets a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. The new 2025 Toyota Vios Hybrid just made its global debut in Thailand.

Aimed squarely at the 2025 Honda City e:HEV RS, Thai customers are expected to pay between THB 729,000 (~RM 94k) for the HEV Premium variant, and the GR Sport variant goes for THB 799,000 (~RM 104k). The Yaris Ativ nameplate is unique to Thailand; for the rest of the world, the model is known as the Toyota Vios.

What powertrain does the 2025 Toyota Vios Hybrid get?

As reported earlier, the powertrain for the Vios Hybrid is lifted off the Toyota Yaris Cross, featuring a 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder petrol engine that does 91 PS and 121 Nm, hooked up to an electric motor that does 80 PS and 141 Nm.

Thanks to its more aerodynamic body versus the Yaris Cross, the Vios Hybrid boasts a fuel consumption figure of 29.4 km/L.

Visually, the 2025 Toyota Vios Hybrid gets redesigned 16-inch alloy wheels with a 5-lug nut design (regular Vios gets a 4-lug nut design). Toyota has also swapped out certain black bits on the exterior with dark chrome and metallic grey pieces (upper grille, lower grille).

The introduction of the Vios Hybrid also marks the arrival of the Vios GR Sport.

Taking cues from its other GR brethren, the Vios GR Sport gets a prominent and angular front grille flanked with a pair sharp trim pieces on each side. The GR Sport variant also gets a unique set of multi-spoke, dual-tone alloy wheels.

Towards the rear of the Vios GR Sport, there is a duck tail spoiler, while the lower rear bumper gets a massive diffuser piece with vertical design elements at each corner.

Stepping inside, the Vios GR Sport gets GR branding on the seats and steering wheel and red ambient lighting. This update also marks the increase of the infotainment display, from nine-inch up to 10.1-inch. There’s also a Pioneer-branded sound system and a Qi wireless charger.

What about Malaysia?

Right now, it’s too soon to say if or when this model arrives here. In order to keep prices competitive, UMW Toyota Motor would need to locally-assemble the model here, including the 2NR-VEX engine.

For the regular Vios, the 2NR-VE engine is currently manufactured by Perodua. It’s possible that Perodua would also be manufacturing the hybrid version of the engine, likely for themselves and for Toyota. Such a move could also potentially open the doors for other Toyota petrol-electric models to be offered here, like the Toyota Yaris Cross.
