smart Malaysia is preparing to launch its third model locally, the 2025 smart #5, which was recently previewed ahead of its official debut. First shown at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025, the smart #5 is the brand’s largest SUV to date and will arrive in Premium and Brabus variants at launch, with the more affordable Pro variant expected in 2026.
Positioned as a D-segment electric SUV, the smart #5 rides on Geely’s PMA2+ platform, which it shares with the newly-launched 2025 Zeekr 7X. Measuring 4,695 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,705 mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase, it occupies the same segment as the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, Xpeng G6, and Zeekr 7X.
What powertrain does the 2025 smart #5 get?
Power for the smart #5 comes from a 100-kWh (94-kWh usable) nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery pack, allowing for a WLTP-rated range of up to 590 km for the Premium variant, and up to 540 km for the more potent Brabus variant.
The 2025 smart #5 Premium gets a rear-mounted electric motor that does 267 kW (363 PS) and 373 Nm, enough to propel this 2.2 tonne SUV from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds.
If that’s not enough, fret not, as smart also has the Brabus variant on offer. The souped-up smart #5 Brabus adds a front-mounted electric motor, bringing the total system output to 475 kW (646 PS) and 710 Nm, which shaves the 0-100 km/h sprint time to 3.8 seconds.
Regardless of power output or variant, the smart #5 has a top speed of 200 km/h.
In terms of recharging the smart #5, this model is the first smart model to offer an 800-volt electric system, capable of DC fast charging up too 400 kW.
At 400 kW, it takes less than 18 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% state-of-charge (SoC). As for AC charging, the smart #5 features a 22-kW on-board charger, requiring roughly 5.5 hours to fully charge (10% to 100% SoC).
What makes the 2025 smart #5 unique?
Perhaps the most eye-catching part of the smart #5 is its design. Designers at smart utilized blocky design elements generously, as the front and rear of the smart #5 is adorned by blocks. It definitely gives the smart #5 an unmistakable vibe.
Stepping inside the cabin and the smart #5 greets you with eye-catching tri-display layout – dual 13.0-inch AMOLED displays for infotainment and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Both the Premium and Brabus variants also feature a 20-speaker, 1,190-Watt Sennheiser sound system.
Other standard equipment of the 2025 smart #5 include a panoramic sunroof, CyberSparksLED+ headlights with Adaptive High Beam Assist, 256-colour ambient lighting, and Automatic Parking Assistant (APA).
The souped-up Brabus adds all-wheel drive, Gesture Tailgate, red brake calipers, 21-inch Monoblock Z wheels, Brabus badges, and Dinamica microfiber seats.
Other standard safety features include Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go Function (ACC with Stop& Go), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Highway Assist with Lane Change Assist and Traffic Jam Assist (HA with LCA and TJA), and 360-degree camera.
The 2025 smart #5 joins the growing list of Chinese models to offer a far-side airbag (centre airbag), bringing the total airbag count to seven.
When will the 2025 smart #5 go on sale in Malaysia?
So far, we understand that Proton New Energy Sdn Bhd (Pro-Net) has plans to launch the 2025 smart #5 within this year.
When it goes on sale, expect the model to square off against similarly-sized rivals like the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, Xpeng G6, and Zeekr 7X.
