Is Tesla exiting Malaysia? No CKD plans announced and EV Tax holiday ending soon

In less than 2 weeks’ time, the EV tax holiday in Malaysia for imported (CBU) electric vehicles (EVs) are scheduled to end, which means that prices of CBU EVs are set to increase.

Does that mean that Tesla, which has yet to announce any local assembly (CKD) plant will quietly exit Malaysia? Fellow EV rivals BYD, Xpeng, MG, Leapmotor, and iCaur have announced plans to locally-assemble their EV models here in Malaysia, as an effort to minimize the impact of the CBU EV tax. Plus, the Austin, Texas-based company has multiple job openings for multiple roles across Malaysia still opened.

Well maybe not quite, as Tesla has just announced that they are opening more Supercharging stations and Destination Charging stations across the country.

The new chargers include:

  • Supercharging station: Nexus Bangsar South: 4 Supercharger stalls and 4 Destination Chargers
  • Destination Charging station: Quayside Mall, Kota Kemuning: 4 Destination Chargers

With the addition of these new chargers, Tesla now operates 18 Supercharging Stations and 17 Destination Stations across Malaysia, comprising of 76 Superchargers and 79 Destination Chargers.

Tesla now has over 13,000 owners in Malaysia

Since entering Malaysia officially in late-2023, Tesla has sold over 13,000 cars.

More impressively, the deliveries were achieved with just three (yes, three) delivery centres across the country – Cyberjaya, Penang, and Johor. No other car brand is able to achieve what Tesla achieved.

Limited-time offers before EV Tax holiday ends

Customers are encouraged to take advantage of Tesla’s 7-Day Express Delivery experience, aimed to help Malaysians receive their vehicles in time before the EV Tax holiday ends later this year.

Furthermore, there are other limited-time offers, including low interest rates starting from 0% and monthly payments from RM 1,588.

In conjunction with the Christmas season, customers are invited to bring friends and family along to experience the festive holiday mode, with vehicles dressed in reindeer-themed decorations and  customised tote bag to take home at Tesla locations until 31-December.
