You read the title right – Malaysia’s highway king, the Perodua Myvi could be getting a petrol-electric hybrid upon the debut of the next-generation model in the near future.
According to Perodua President and CEO Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad during a recent press conference, he mentioned that their next full model change (FMC) model would feature a hybrid powertrain.

Said petrol-electric hybrid powertrain was initially planned for the recently-launched 2026 Perodua Traz, but due to delays caused by Daihatsu’s issues with compliances canned the idea for the Traz. “Initially, we planned to introduce a hybrid version, but it was scrapped. We’re still studying whether this model or future models will feature a hybrid, but it depends on market feedback,” he told members of the media during the preview session of the Perodua Traz.

Dato’ Sri Zainal also added that Daihatsu’s e:smart hybrid solution is optimised for A-segment models like the Ativa, while B-segment models like the Traz, utilizes a Toyota-based hybrid solution. “The Traz is a B-segment model, but DMC’s expertise is largely on A-segment models and the hybrid used is a series hybrid. It uses a small engine to act as a generator for the electric motors.”
“But because of the irregularities that Daihatsu faced, we don’t have enough time to look into the addition of a hybrid for the Traz,” he added.
Does that mean that the Myvi Hybrid is canned?

Far from it – “Rest assured that when we do our next model, which will get a full model change (FMC), we will include a hybrid. It will be for the A- and B-segment models,” Dato’s Sri Zainal mentioned.
The Perodua Myvi is a likely candidate for the hybrid powertrain, given that the fourth-generation model is currently under development, according to Funtasticko.
Codenamed D01D, the next-generation Perodua Myvi could be offered with the regular petrol and petrol-electric hybrid powertrains, with the latter likely to feature the Toyota-based petrol-electric hybrid (not the Corolla Cross HEV’s system). In the case of the DNGA-based Yaris Cross HEV, it gets a 1.5-litre four-cylinder 2NR-VEX paired to an electric motor for a combined output of 80 PS and 121 Nm.
