Now in its eighth year of production, the current-generation Proton X70 is a tad bit long in the tooth. Granted, Proton has been continuously improving its first-ever SUV over the past few years, with the most recent update being the new four-cylinder BHE15 engine.
During a recent trip to Hangzhou, China, Proton and Geely showcased a number of models, hinting that some could arrive in Malaysia as a Proton. Outside of China, the Boyue L is sold as the Geely Starray in selected markets. \

And given that the Geely Boyue L was showcased alongside the Geely Starshine 6 (next-gen Proton S70?), there is a chance that we’re looking at the next-gen Proton X70.

What is the Geely Boyue L?

This is technically the second-generation Geely Boyue L, which debuted back in 2022. Said model then received a visual update in April 2025, encompassing a revised front fascia and overhauled cabin.

The front fascia now looks more conventional versus the pre-updated Boyue L, while the cabin drops the portrait infotainment display in favour of a more traditional horizontal one.

That said, if the Boyue L does arrive in Malaysia as the next-gen X70, chances are, it could get a bespoke dashboard, similar to how the refreshed Proton X50 received a different dashboard compared to the Geely Binyue Cool.

Underneath, the Geely Boyue L is underpinned by the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform – the very same one that underpins models like the Volvo XC40, Lynk & Co 02, and Polestar 2.

In China, powertrain options include the aforementioned BHE15, as well as a more potent 2.0-litre turbocharged JLH-4G20TDJ four-cylinder petrol engine that does 218 PS and 325 Nm.
Regardless of engine, the sole transmission option is a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, driving the front wheels.
Excited yet? Well, if Proton plays their cards right with the next-gen X70, it could help them reclaim the best-selling C-segment SUV title back.
