All-new 2025 Proton X50 facelift: Now with a new 1.5L 4-cyd engine, here’s what you need to know

Almost 5 years since its introduction in Malaysia, Proton has given the 2025 Proton X50 an extremely comprehensive overhaul.

And when we say comprehensive, we mean it – the exterior is brand new, the cabin has been revamped, and there’s a brand-new 4-cylinder engine. The last one is perhaps the most eyebrow-raising highlight, especially to those vocal about the 3-pot in the pre-facelift model.

In this round of update, Proton has updated the line-up to just three variants: Executive, Premium, and Flagship. The Standard variant has been dropped.

UPDATE: Bookings are now opened for the 2025 Proton X50

Exterior – 2025 Proton X50 is now sharper and bolder than before

The revised exterior is perhaps the most eye-grabbing highlight, surpassing even the earlier R3 variants of the X50.

Up front, the LED projector headlights on the pre-updated model has been swapped out for swankier, slimmer LED reflector units, which flank a revised front grille with Proton’s circular emblem and red trim. Beneath that is a large and angular lower grille, which gives the new X50 an aggressive front fascia.

The rear of the new 2025 Proton X50 has also been reworked, now with a full-width LED tail light that gives this B-SUV a more modern look.

A total of five body colours will be made available: Armour Silver, Jet Grey, Passion Red, Snow White, and Teal Bayou Green – the latter replaces Ocean Blue for this upgrade exercise.

Interior – eMas 7-inspired cabin with fewer buttons than before

While the pre-updated Proton X50 carried over the donor Geely Binyue’s cabin, albeit reconfigured for a right-hand drive layout, the new X50 gets a bespoke cabin that is Proton’s own design.

Out goes the 10.25-inch on the pre-updated model, now replaced with an iPad Pro-rivalling-sized infotainment display that measures 14.6-inches. The new 2025 Proton X50 is also the first Proton model to launch straight with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – there’s no waiting like earlier Proton models.

The full colour LCD instrument cluster on the old model also gets replaced with a digital instrument cluster, ala Proton eMas7.

Other noteworthy changes include a repositioned gear shifter, now mounted on the right side of the steering column, while the wiper and light controls are done on the left stalk – mirroring the eMas 7.

Powertrain – Goodbye 3-cylinder, hello 4-cylinder

Perhaps the headlining feature of the new 2025 Proton X50 is the new turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

Here, the new 4-cylinder Proton X50 outputs 181 PS at 5,500 rpm and 290 Nm from 2,000 rpm to 3,500 rpm, mated to Proton’s tried-and-tested, wet-type, dual-clutch, 7-speed automatic transmission, which sends drive to the front wheels. It marks a 4 PS and 35 Nm increase over the older 3-pot motor.

Proton claims that this new 4-cylinder 2025 Proton X50 now completes the century sprint in just 7.6 seconds – 0.3 seconds faster than before, whilst consuming 4.7 % less fuel than before.

New to the 4-cylinder Proton X50 is the Rear Side Radar System (RSRS), as well as improved Auto Park Assist (APA) system and 360-degree HD Camera + 180-degree undercarriage transparent view ensuring the 2025 Proton X50 delivers both intelligence and confidence behind the wheel.

“As the leading SUV model in the Proton range, expectations are high for the All-New Proton X50 to carry the model’s legacy of excellence. By offering customers a comprehensive technology and performance upgrade together with luxurious features and combining it with exciting and sporty new exterior styling, we think Proton’s latest offering will resonate with customers from all walks of life reset the benchmark in the B-segment SUV class.
