Thailand will soon be launching the 2025 GWM Tank 500 Diesel, which will be complementing the petrol-electric hybrid variant.
Over in the Kingdom, Great Wall Motor Thailand will be offering a total of three variants of the body-on-frame, diesel-powered Tank 500:
- Tank 500 Diesel 2.4T Pro 2WD
- Tank 500 Diesel 2.4T Ultra 2WD
- Tank 500 Diesel 2.4T Ultra 4WD
The latter two Ultra variants can also be specified with the Black Warrior kit, which as the name implies, swaps out all the shiny chrome bits in favour of glossy black, giving the SUV a dark and menacing look.
Prices are set to be announced during the launch, though the regular HEV variants are priced between THB 1,849,000 (~RM 240k) to THB 2,069,000 (~RM 269k).

What powertrain does the 2025 GWM Tank 500 Diesel get?
At the heart of the diesel-powered Tank 500 is a turbodiesel 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), which outputs 184 PS at 3,600 rpm ad 480 Nm from 1,500 rpm to 2,500 rpm.
Similar to the petrol-electric hybrid Tank 500, the diesel variants receive a nine-speed automatic transmission, which sends power either to the rear wheels (2WD) or all four wheels (4WD).
What equipment does the 2025 GWM Tank 500 Diesel get?
Like the petrol-electric hybrid, the diesel variant also gets the selectable drive models, though this depends on the driveline layout – the 2WD variants get Normal, Sport, and Eco modes, while the 4WD variant offer nine drive modes:
- 2H
- 2H
- 4L
- Dirt
- Expert
- Gravel
- Mountain
- Sand
- Snow
Other off-road bits for the 4WD variant include front and rear electric differential locks, 360-degree camera with transparent underbody view, off-road cruise control, and Tank Turn.
Visually, it appears that the Thai-spec Tank 500 Diesel variants drop the tailgate-mounted spare wheel, opting instead for a flatter-looking tailgate, with a generous dose of chrome trimming scattered around.
Per Autolifethailand, equipment count for the diesel-powered Tank 500 variants is largely identical to the petrol-electric Tank 500 HEV, including the larger 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, Nappa leather upholstery, and panoramic sunroof.
That said, equipment such as the power-folding side steps, Wading Mode, 12-speaker Infinity sound system and power-adjustable steering column are exclusive to the petrol-electric HEV variant.
What about Malaysia?
Right now, we reckon that it’s too soon to say if the diesel Tank 500 will come to Malaysia. After all, the Tank 500 HEV made its debut here just two months ago and have since received more than 150 bookings.
That said, our Malaysian-spec Tank 500 HEV is imported from Thailand, so it’s not too much of a stretch for GWM Malaysia to introduce the diesel variant here, should they decide to.
A 2025 debut could be rules out, as GWM Malaysia is focusing on launching two more models over the next couple of months: the souped-up Ora Good Cat GT and GWM Wey 80.
