With July 2025 upon us, the Road Transport Department of Malaysia (JPJ) has released car sales data for June 2025.
Perodua reigns supreme with a clear lead
With a total of 166,188 units sold in June 2025 (year-to-date, YTD), Perodua has a clear lead over every other car brand in Malaysia.
Perodua’s leading position was driven primarily by the Perodua Bezza, with a total of 46,175 units sold YTD, which also cements its position as Malaysia’s best-selling car to-date. In June alone, Perodua managed to sell 6,150 units of the Bezza. An impressive figure, though it still marked a drop of 3,013 units compared to May 2025.
Trailing in second place is the Perodua Axia with a total of 40,653 units sold YTD. In June 2025, Perodua sold 5,207 units of the Axia. Like the Bezza, sales of the Axia also dropped in the month of June when compared to May. In the case of this A-segment hatchback, sales dropped by 2,401 units compared to the preceding month.
The Perodua Myvi, which some refers to as the Malaysian Icon, saw a total of 34,148 units sold YTD. Perodua’s third best-selling model sold a total of 4,183 units in June 2025.
Other Perodua models on the top-10 list include the Perodua Alza (2,807 units) and Perodua Ativa (2,675 units). Only the ageing Perodua Aruz didn’t make the cut for the top-10 best-selling models.

Proton continues to maintain second spot, but Toyota is closing in
Proton has been making strides with their sales in recent months – the Proton Saga continues to be a Malaysian favourite.
Last month, a total of 5,195 units of the Proton Saga found new home, just a slight drop from the previous month’s 5,357 units. It’s also worth mentioning that 9-July is the anniversary of the Proton Saga, in which Proton’s bread-and-butter model is now 40 years old.
The Proton S70 narrowly missed the top 10, selling 1,395 units in June. It was edged out by the Toyota Alphard, which sold 1,490 units.

Toyota secures third place, beats out Honda by a decent margin
Sitting in third place is Toyota, with the Aichi-based car maker shifting a total of 57,370 units YTD.
The best-selling Toyota model, to nobody’s surprise, is the Toyota Vios. A total of 2,273 units of the Toyota Vios were sold in June 2025, which contributed to its YTD sales of 13,388 units.
From January 2025 to June 2025, the Toyota Vios is Malaysia’s best-selling non-national B-segment model, outselling its closest rival, the Honda City, by a small margin (vs 12,875 units sold).
The ageing Toyota Yaris continues to hold its ground, with 555 units sold in June 2025.

Chery is Malaysia’s best-selling Chinese marque
With a total of 14,166 units sold YTD, Chery is currently Malaysia’s best-selling Chinese marque. Sales of Chery was primarily driven by the popular Jaecoo J7, which sold 1,119 units in June 2025.
The Omoda C9 also contributed to Chery’s overall sales figure, with a total of 487 units sold last month. Since its introduction in Malaysia in early-December 2024 (deliveries started in January 2025), a total of 3,365 units of this SUV were sold.
The recently-launched 2025 Chery Tiggo Cross is also off to a great start. Since the model was launched on 9-July, Chery Malaysia has collected 1,000 bookings in just two days. It’ll be interesting to watch sales of the Tiggo Cross over the next few months (after the initial sales spike of a brand-new model, that is).

BYD sits at seventh spot, but sales may improve soon
BYD currently sits in seventh spot with 5,400 units sold YTD.
The main contributor for BYD’s sales is the BYD Atto 3, which saw 471 units sold in June 2025. YTD sales for this EV SUV currently stands at 1,701 units, putting it as the third best-selling EV in Malaysia.
As for the larger BYD EV SUV, the BYD Sealion, last month saw 320 units finding new homes. Cumulative YTD sales are ahead of the Atto 3, with 1,960 units sold YTD, cementing its spot as the second best-selling EV in the country.
With the launch of the BYD Atto 2 happening soon, we believe that BYD’s overall sales could be picking up over the next couple of months.

Mazda occupies ninth position, most sales from CX-30
With a total of 4,127 units sold YTD, Mazda currently occupies the ninth spot on this list.
The biggest sales contributor for Mazda, surprisingly, isn’t the ever-popular Mazda CX-5, but rather the slightly smaller Mazda CX-30.
YTD sales figure for the Mazda CX-30 stood at 1,641 units, with a total of 190 units sold in June 2025. The larger CX-5 may have outsold the CX-30 in June 2025 with 232 units sold, but the CX-30 has a slight sales lead (1,641 units vs 1,508 units).
The larger Mazda CX-8 is Mazda’s third best-selling model with 391 units sold YTD, followed by the Mazda 3 with 308 units sold YTD.
Other Mazda models contributing to the overall total include the Mazda 2 (4 units), Mazda 6 (11 units), Mazda BT-50 (4 units), and Mazda CX-9 (5 units).

Premium segment: Mercedes-Benz and BMW are Malaysian’s top choice
In the premium segment, Mercedes-Benz remains as a favourite amongst shoppers. A total of 4,614 units were registered YTD (emphasis on the registered, which we will explain below), roughly 1,000 units more than BMW (3,673 units).
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class has been a very popular entry point into the premium segment, with a total of 164 units registered in June 2025, with a YTD figure of 1,010 units. Trailing in second plate in the Mercedes-Benz camp is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, with a YTD figure of 825 units (June 2025: 137 units).
As for BMW, the most popular model is the BMW 5 Series, with a total of 666 units registered YTD (June 2025: 102 units), while the second place is the BMW 3 Series. A total of 580 units were registered from January to June 2025 (June 2025: 69 units).
That said, the YTD figures should be taken with a grain of salt, as the JPJ data takes into account both new and reconditioned car registrations. The same applies not just to premium marques, but also some mainstream marques.
