BYD Malaysia CKD plant confirmed in Tanjong Malim; starts in 2026

BYD is set to join other Chinese car manufacturers like Chery (and their related sub-brands like Jaecoo and Jetour), GAC, GWM, and Leapmotor to commence local-assembly (CKD) operations in Malaysia.

The new BYD Malaysia CKD plant is set to be located in Tanjong Malim and will occupy an area of 600,000 square meters. According to BYD, the new plant is expected to begin vehicle production by the second half of 2026.

According to Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, “Malaysia has always been one of BYD’s most important markets in Southeast Asia, and today’s dual announcement of CKD and the New BYD SEAL marks a new chapter in our journey here. With the strong support of Sime Motors, we are confident in deepening our roots in Malaysia and bringing world-class EV technology closer to local customers.”

He added, “This commitment is not only about delivering innovative products, but also about investing in the future of Malaysia’s EV ecosystem — from local assembly, to talent development, and electric mobility. Together, we look forward to accelerating Malaysia’s transition towards a greener and smarter transportation future, with BYD standing as a long-term partner to the nation.”

New BYD Malaysia CKD plant would ensure EV incentives continue

With the new BYD Malaysia CKD plant, the company will be able to qualify for CKD EV incentives, which exempt these CKD models from excise duties and sales tax till 31-December 2027.

That being said, today’s announcement did not mention which BYD model would get the CKD treatment. All of BYD’s models – which are EVs – are imported (CBU) from China.

One possible candidate is the 2025 BYD Atto 2, which has a price tag of RM 100k – the current minimum price cap for CBU EVs in the country. With CKD operations, it is possible that BYD Malaysia could offer the Atto 2 with a price below RM 100k.
