BYD is Malaysia’s best-selling EV brand for 3 consecutive years, over 28,500 cars sold

Since its introduction in late-2022, BYD has went on to become Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle (EV) brand in the country.

According to Adeline Liew, Managing Director of BYD Sime Motors, BYD has managed to sell more than 28,500 cars since the brand launched here in December 2022 with the BYD Atto 3. Over the past couple of years, BYD has launched no less than 7 new brands, spanning from sedans, to SUVs, all the way to MPVs.

As of January 2026, BYD remains as the best-selling non-national EV brand in the country, recording 913 units. With sales of Denza combined (55 units), that figure increases to 968 units.

In Malaysia, BYD’s most recent launch was the BYD Seal 6 EV – a C-segment, rear-wheel drive sedan that’s priced from RM 100,000, offering a range of 410 km (WLTP). Other BYD models that’s sold here include the BYD Atto 2, BYD Atto 3, BYD Sealion 7, BYD M6, BYD Seal, and BYD Dolphin. As such, BYD has the widest range of EVs in the country, totaling seven models by BYD, and one by Denza.

Later this year, Eagle Zhao, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia added that they plan to introduce the Denza Z9 GT in the country, thus complementing the Denza D9 in their local portfolio. The Z9 GT was previewed a couple of times back in 2025, with the most recent being the 2025 PACE event at Setia Alam.

In addition to that, BYD has also committed to establishing a local assembly (CKD) facility at the KLK TechPark in Tanjong Malim, Malaysia. The new plant, spanning more than 600,000 square meters, is expected to start churning out vehicles as soon as the second half of 2026.
