Proton posts highest Q1 sales since 2004, now 27.4% market share

Proton has recorded its highest first-quarter sales since 2004, with 49,140 units sold in the first three months of 2026, marking a year-to-date (YTD) growth of 40.1%. March alone contributed 15,706 units, up 15.4% over February and 12.8% ahead of March 2025. This comes against a backdrop of a broader market contraction, with Total Industry Volume (TIV) estimated to have shrunk by 4.9% over the same period.

Proton’s market share for March is estimated at 25.1%, with its year-to-date (YTD) market share forecast at 27.4% — the brand’s highest since 2017.

Proton eMas sold 3,023 units in March, led by the eMas 5 with 2,071 units. The eMas 5’s Q1 total of 6,701 units makes it Malaysia’s most popular EV model year-to-date (YTD). The eMas 7 PHEV contributed 646 units in its first full month of sales, while the eMas 7 EV climbed for a second consecutive month to 306 units.

Zhang Qiang, Chief Executive Officer of Pro-Net, said, “We are humbled by the warm reception Malaysians have given Proton eMas since the brand was launched in 2024. Our community outreach programme to expose Malaysians to EV technology and our products as well as build trust in our efforts to support customers with a comprehensive dealer network and easily accessible charging infrastructure are now paying dividends. The proof is in the sales numbers achieved and our target is to make Proton eMas the number one new energy vehicle brand in 2026.”

The Proton Saga remains the volume anchor of Proton’s ICE lineup, with 5,438 units sold in March bringing its Q1 total to 21,770 units, averaging over 7,256 units per month and marking a 38% increase over the same period in 2025.

The Proton X50 retains its position as the best-selling B-segment SUV, with 3,265 units sold in March and a Q1 total of 7,571 units, up 48% over 2025.

The Proton S70 sold 2,254 units in March, recording its best monthly performance since February 2024, and thus retaining its title as the best-selling C-segment sedan. Notably, the S70’s March volume exceeded that of several smaller B-segment rivals.

The Proton X90, launched during Ramadan this year, recorded 323 units in March despite not benefitting from a full month of sales activity, making it the best-selling 7-seater D-segment SUV. Strong booking numbers suggest volume is set to rise further in the coming months.

Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar, said, “Proton’s Q1 sales performance is the result of the investments the company has put into its technology, dealer network and after sales service, which in turn has built customer confidence in our products and services. These investments also include various localisation and assembly programmes that result in better value for customers while creating a multiplier effect for the country’s automotive ecosystem. Our ICE models are undergoing a sales resurgence across the board, but Proton remains mindful we also need to consider the needs of car buyers if fuel prices increase. That is why our updated models are more fuel efficient and lower maintenance, and through Proton eMas, we offer buyers an easy path to EV and PHEV technology should they want to make the switch.”
